First three ABC MA graduates
ABC MA Degree Requirements

Students in the MA program are required to complete 36 credits (12 courses): 
  • 18 credits (6 courses) of required coursework
  • 9 credits (3 courses) of ABC/Psych electives (one of which must be an applied course, such as Psych 754 - Applied Animal Welfare or Psych 758 - Conservation Biology/Psychology)
  • 9 credits (3 courses) of electives within ABC/Psych or other approved courses (e.g. Anthropology, GIS)

Courses are three credits except one and two credit independent research courses.

        PSYCH 69000 – Independent research in Psychology
        PSYCH 70500 .01 – Statistical Methods in Psychology I   
        PSYCH 707.01 – Thesis Research
        PSYCH 717 – Animal Behavior and Conservation in Captivity and the Wild
        PSYCH 751.03 – Basic Psychological Processes 1: Perception, Learning, and Comparative Cognition   

        One of the following:
        PSYCH 739 – Research Methods in Animal Behavior (A, B)
        PSYCH 70100 – Advanced Experimental Psychology I           
                                
- ABC/PSYCH Elective Courses (9 credits)

        PSYCH 641 – Comparative Psychology
        PSYCH 690 – Independent Research, 3 credits
        PSYCH 691 – Independent Research, 1 credit

        PSYCH 716 – Animal Behavior I: Mechanisms (special permission)
        PSYCH 717.51 – Field Study in Animal Behavior and Conservation
        PSYCH 718 – Animal Behavior II: Ethology (special permission)
        PSYCH 730 – Psychology of Learning
        PSYCH 750.xx – Special Topics *
        PSYCH 754 – Applied Animal Welfare and Behavior

*Special Topics courses and Independent Research projects related to ABC will depend upon student and faculty interests. Recent topics included Evolution of Animal Play, Companion Animals in Society, and Urban Animals. 680.xx courses are less advanced than 750.xx courses.

Note: Completing the degree in two years requires taking Psych 705 during the first semester in the program. It is prerequisite for Psych 739 given only in the Spring semester. Psych 739 is prerequisite for Psych 707.01. To take Psych 707.01, you must have thesis sponsor and a research plan.
ABC Certificate Degree Requirements
Students must complete a total of 15 credits (five courses). This consists of 2 required courses (PSYCH 717 and either PSYCH 641 or PSYCH 751.03) and an additional three elective courses (see above).
Courses taken for the certificate may be used as credits towards the ABC MA Program, if a student applies and is accepted.

**Students who only enroll in the advanced certificate program are not eligible for Federal student loans. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid for additional information about your financial aid eligibility.
